Co Loa Citadel

Co Loa Citadel is suited next to Phong Khe, far from west of Hanoi 20kms. It comes back to ancient Vietnam. There are many impressive towers, relics and ruins. It is an important land in Northern Vietnam. It is steeped in myth and legend, making it an important landmark in northern Vietnam. The castle inside is protected by two outer walls.

There are number of ancient relics which have been unearthed by excavations throughout the years. It has important artifacts such as Dong Son style pottery and many bronze drums.

Today, Vietnam archeological groups protect the castle. Many tourists came to explore it. The ancient walls surrounded the ancient’s landscape gardens. It makes the grounds become impressive as the castle itself. It is not hard to picture it when it would have been in its full glory.

Co Loa festival:

Coming from the 6th to the 16th day of the Lunar New Year at An Duong Vuong temple in Dong Anh District, on the outskirts of Hanoi, Co Loa Festival base on the legend of An Duong King of Au Lac and his magic crossbow. As the legend, Thuc Phan receipts a magic crossbow by the Genius Kim Quy, a Golden Tortoise. Trong Thuy husband of Mi Nuong , the son of rebel Chinese general Trieu Da, and thereby unwittingly enabled Trieu Da to conquer Co Loa in 208 B.C. King An Duong said his daughter must be killed and then he suicide.  Nowadays, coming there you will still can see many vestiges of the episodes of the legend.

Coming Co Loa in the 6th of the 1st lunar month, tourists will have chance to take part in Co Loa Festival held by the 12 hamlets of the village.

All the eight communes hold the incense offering ceremony at the communal house on the afternoon of the 5th day of the first lunar month. Similar ceremony was hold at Thuong Temple by the village officials and mandarins. The 6th of the first lunar month is the official festival day; in front of the two altars have a stone tablet and a funeral oration. A flag is in front of the literature that symbolizes the five elements (metal, wood, water, fire and earth), a musical company, and a sacrifice.

A sacrificial ceremony lasts until 12p.m. It takes place in the King’s honor, with traditional music. Next to the ceremony is the procession the god was taken from the temple to the communal house by 12 villages. It is one of the biggest processions. After coming to the main entrance, the palanquins come back to their villages. The festival hold until the 16th day of the first lunar month, having evening fireworks, there are many traditional games namely cock fighting, human chess, tug of war, card playing, wrestling, swing, rope climbing, martial arts, flag dancing and archery and performances of Ca Tru, Cheo and Tuong.

On the final day of the festival, a big farewell will be took place at the temple. The cult table of god will be returned to the sanctuary, after the rituals as in the main festival day. Local people enjoy the god’s favor and wish a prosperity year and happiness. The meaningful festival is always closed with a thanksgiving ceremony.
