Hanoi Opera House

Hanoi Opera House is situated next to the Red River and far from east of Hoan Kiem lake about several  hundreds meters. The Opera House is an incredible house with French architect and typical Gothic and Mosaic characters showed on the door and the glassed room. The facade is colonial French with pillars and balconies overlooking the city center. The 900-seat opera house plays host to visiting foreign performances as well as Vietnamese symphonies. The outside is very beautiful combining both French neo-classical design and shuttered windows, wrought iron balconies and tiles friezes.

The history of Hanoi Opera House

Harley and Broyer were the major designers of Hanoi Opera House. It was built by the French Colonialist Government in the yearly years of the 20th century. In fact, this design was contributed of many architects. The construction began on June, 7th 1901 undertaken by a local supervisor – Harley Architect. Mr Travary and Savelon were in charge of the construction. The work covers 2600 square meters with the 87-meter length and 30-meter width, the peak of which is 34 meters above the ground. The Hanoi Opera House had the unique   architect in combination with Tuylory Castle and Opera de Paris. Orankta, Greek ancient architecture, was also designers consulted.

Hanoi Opera House has a great value in history, architecture as well as culture. The theatre can be called the evidence of Vietnam’s development as it  has seen many significant historical events associated to the August Revolution and the early years of Vietnam Democratic Republic.

Out standing features:

Hanoi Opera House is well known for its unique architecture. It is furnished rationally and harmoniously.  Today, it is known as the largest and most luxurious Vietnam’s theatre.

In front of the site was a big pond, next to the city gate of Tay Long (another name is Tay Luong) of the ancient Thang Long Capital. Because the theater was built on the pond, it meets many difficulties.

Hanoi Opera House is of the same architectural style as the Paris Opera House. But some foreign architects said that it was more magnificent and attractive than the Paris Opera House. Inside the opera house, there are a large stage and a main audience room with a size of 24x24m, with many small rooms for audience on the central floor. On the second floor, the large hall leaded by the stair case on the first floor. On the both sides, you can see the sub-staircase and corridors.

The management chamber including 18 make –up rooms, 2 rooms for voice training, 1 library and 1 meeting room at  the back of the Opera House.  On the second floor, there is a huge mirror room. Some large scale international concerts have been held successfully in Hanoi Opera House, for example the program of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra playing the Ninth Symphony by Beethoven.

The Opera House brought cultural, architectural, historical values. It had the best value in Vietnam.

Nowadays, the Opera House is an ideal place for meeting of those who like theatrical shows and traditional songs, classical opera as well. It is also a tourist attraction for local and foreign visitors. This is truly a beautiful building in Hanoi. The best place to see the Opera House is from the 6th floor of the Hanoi Hilton.
