One Pillar Pagoda

Chua Mot Cot formally Diên Hựu tự (Translate: The One Pillar Pagoda), is a historic Buddhist temple in Hanoi which literally means “Long lasting happiness and good luck””). It is a historic Buddhist temple in Hanoi.

Where is it located?

The unique pagoda is suited in the western part of the city, next to Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, Ong Ich Khiem St., Ngoc Ha, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi.

The Legendary story: According to a legend, for a long time the King Ly Thai To’s wife  could not given birth to a boy (who is desired to carry on family’s name), so  he went to the pagoda to pray to Buddha. One night, he dreamt that he was given a baby boy by the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, who was seated on a great lotus flower in a square-shaped lotus pond on the western side of Thang Long Citadel. Few months later, his wife gave a birth to a male child; the King requested the construction for a pagoda supported on pillar like the lotus in his dream. The pagoda was built like a lotus booming in the water.

Formation: Emperor Ly Thai Tong had this temple constructed in gratitude for the mentioned significant legendary event in 1049, by erecting a pillar in the middle of a lotus pond, and a temple of lotus-shape, as what he saw in the dream. Stream of tourists has been attracted by the unique shape of the pagoda with the special story.

During the Ly Dynasty era, an annual royal ceremony on the occasion of Vesak, the birthday of the Gautama Buddha were held in this temple. The monarch held a Buddha-bathing ceremony annually, and it attracted monks and laymen alike to the ceremony. The monarch would then free a bird, which was followed by the people.

In 1954, the pagoda was destroyed by the French Union forces before they withdrew from Vietnam after the first Indochina War, and then it was rebuilt.

Today’s form: In1955 the pagoda was recovered by the Vietnamese government. Today One Pillar Pagoda’s structure is the replica of the original pagoda. It is commonly believed that you will have the prosperity and health if you pray here.

Opening time: The pagoda is open daily from 08:00 a.m to 05:00 p.m
