Perfume Pagoda

The Perfume Pagoda- Huong Pagoda ( known as “ Chua Huong” in Vietnamese) far about 60 kilometers southwest of Ha Noi, is one among the largest and unique religious sites in Huong Son Commune, My Duc District- a district of old Ha Tay province which has recently emerged into the Hanoi.

It is an enormous complex of Buddhist temples and shrines. Every year, Perfume Pagoda has attracted millions of tourists; especially a huge number of tourists visiting this site in its festival (from 15th February of lunar calendar). The pagoda is a place for those who enjoy serene beauty due to its absolute picturesque landscape with temples and caves in the area.

Ben Duc (Pier Duc) is the first starting point of the pilgrimage. It takes over 2 hours to go from Hanoi to Ben Duc. In the festival, Ben Duc is packed with thousands of row boats used for shuttling visitors.

Next, visitors will visit Suoi Yen (Yen stream).  It flows between two mountains for 3 kilometers. When sitting on the boat enjoying the surrounding the landscape, tourists feel that the stream is endless. It is a romantic and scenic route to Huong pagoda.

Chua Thien tru ( Thien Tru pagoda) is  another site tourists should not miss. There have many interesting protocols including Den Trinh which means “registration shrine” is the first stop before climbing up to Huong Mount. Then, Thien Tru pagoda (chuà Ngoài – Outer Pagoda) is the next point of interest would be a visit. It was built in the 18th century under King Le Thanh Tong dynasty. Its name means a heaven kitchen. It is famous for Thuy Tien tower, a granite monolith. Tien Son grotto is on the right; it has five granite statues and various formations on the walls of the cave. Visiting here, pilgrims have chances to admire the pagoda’s beauty and wonderful local landscapes.

Huong tich Grotto with the literally meaning “traces of fragrance”.  Huong Tich’s path has many magnificently luxuriant landscapes. In front of the cave has stone stairs. Stepping down the 120- step stairs, visitors will find the inscription “the first- ranking grotto under the Southern Sky” in Han scripts, which are traces of Lord Tinh Do Vuong Trinh Sam’s calligraphy in the 3rd lunar month of the year of the Tiger (Canh Dan -1770). Grotto has the purely cool atmosphere  in a dim light before figuring out naturally architectural works such as Dun Gao (Rice) rock, gold and silver trees, Girl and Boy Mountains (in the shapes of a girl and a boy), and so forth. The noteworthy is Avalokitesvara’s statue, carved out of emerald stone on a rocky lotus, was constructed in 1973.

Huong pagoda complex is one of the top tourism destinations in Ha Tay Buddhists in particular and tourists in general.
