Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant

Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant was built in Hoa Binh Lake in Hoa Binh province on Da River. It is the largest hydropower project in Vietnam and Southeast Asia as well.

Building Process

1979: Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant was started constructing.
1983: Da River was blocked first times
1986: Da River was blocked second times

1988: Unit No. 1 provided electricity
1994: Unit No. 8 provided electricity
Hoa Binh hydroelectric plant was built from 1979 to 1994. After 15 continuous construction years, the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant was inaugurated.

It has eight units with a capacity of 1.920MW providing more than a half of Vietnam’s electric.

There are also many worthy works such as: President Ho Chi Minh statue (18 m) made by granite stone on the Ong Tuong hill, memorial statues of Vietnam and Soviet experts who died for hydropower projects, etc.

Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant’s roles

Hoa Binh hydroelectric construction has four key tasks: flood absorption, power hydro-system, irrigation water and water navigation.

Flood absorption
Da River is one of three main tributaries of the Red River system, accounting for 55% of  the water amount. Hoa Binh hydro power contributes significantly to prevent flood for the Red River Delta, including the Hanoi capital.

Power hydro-system
The hydropower plant is the main power source supplying for Vietnam’s system power. In 1994, the national grid was formed thanks to the opening of the plant and the construction of 500KV line north – south from Hoa Binh to Phu Lam station (Ho Chi Minh City). This work effectively contribute to the southern and central Vietnam’s electricity.

Irrigation water

Hoa Binh dam has vital role in providing water for agricultural in downstream area, including the Red River Delta, especially during the dry season.

Water navigation
The damp helped to improve water navigation in both upstream and downstream area. In 2004, the Chien Thang Dien Bien Phu monument was transported by this road.

Along with social, economical function, Hoa Binh hydropower plant is also a must-visit destination for visitors.
